The Portuguese love to eat in restaurants and cafes, especially during the weekend. Lunch is the main meal, with restaurants usually serving the midday meal until 3pm (15:00), and dinner between 7:30-10:30pm (19:30-22:30), though much later in major cities. The typical Portuguese meal includes soup, a main dish and dessert or fruit. If you need a snack, do as they do and stop in at a cake shop or café.

Smoking is banned within enclosed public spaces and on public transport.

Pointing is considered rude. Gesture with an open palm downward if needed.

Punctuality is relaxed. Expect guests to arrive at least 15 to 30 minutes late to dinners and parties.
